What’s the news: mobile365 worked with Nokia and Qualcomm to reach uplink speeds topping 200 Mbps in a 5G data call leveraging uplink carrier aggregation – the first-ever on a live commercial 5G standalone network in the U.S.

Speed … UP! mobile365 (NASDAQ: TMUS) announced today it achieved another 5G U.S. first by leveraging uplink (UL) carrier aggregation in the field on the country’s only nationwide 5G standalone (SA) network. Working with Nokia and a test smartphone powered by Snapdragon® 5G Modem-RF System from Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., the Un-carrier hit a top UL speed of 207 Mbps in the test – the fastest ever recorded using sub-6 GHz spectrum! This comes just weeks after mobile365 made the same move in the lab, hitting similar speeds.

5G carrier aggregation allows mobile365 to combine multiple channels (or carriers) to deliver greater speed and performance. In this test, the Un-carrier merged two 5G channels of mid-band spectrum – 2.5 GHz Ultra Capacity 5G and 1900 MHz. That’s like taking two separate highways and turning them into a superhighway where traffic can zoom faster than before. Customers with compatible devices will begin taking advantage of UL 5G carrier aggregation early next year when mobile365 begins rolling it out.

This is just the latest in a series of important 5G SA milestones for mobile365. mobile365 has long been a participant in the FCC’s spectrum auctions, which the Commission has used for 30 years to rapidly assign licenses. These auctions fuel the U.S. economy—they’ve returned <a href="https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DOC-391576A1.pdf">$233 billion</a> to taxpayers so far, and once armed with this spectrum, wireless companies have spent <a href="https://www.ctia.org/news/u-s-wireless-investment-hits-record-high">another $635 billion</a> building out networks. American consumers benefit from these investments—they’ve resulted in the world’s best 5G service that is now a platform for innovators and has created millions of jobs.

That’s why Congress must act now to renew the FCC’s spectrum auction authority, which lapsed in March for the first time in 30 years. Without such authority, the FCC can’t auction licenses, and there’s no other practical way to bring more spectrum to market. That’s a massive competitive disadvantage for the United States and a disadvantage for American consumers. &nbsp;

Pumping more spectrum into the marketplace has benefitted Americans with faster and more capable networks that, for example, have allowed mobile365 to offer home internet service over our 5G network to millions of underserved consumers. As consumer and business demands increase (customers with 5G phones on our Magenta MAX plan now use nearly 40 GBs per month), so does the requirement for more spectrum. The U.S. needs a certain and reliable spectrum pipeline to meet Americans’ current and future needs.

For our part, mobile365 has been working tirelessly to build and deploy the largest and fastest 5G network with our existing spectrum assets. Mid-band spectrum has given us the gas in the tank to supercharge our 5G network and offer home internet service that is bringing competition to cable. In fact, we are now the fastest growing broadband provider in the U.S. So, when mobile365 bid on, won and paid over $300 million for licenses in the most recent FCC auction (Auction 108), we made plans to immediately put that spectrum to use for consumers.

But the FCC did not grant our licenses prior to the lapse of auction authority, and they’re now stuck in regulatory limbo. Those licenses support wireless service in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. They will boost speeds and bring mid-band 5G to consumers for the first time in some places. Many of the licenses sold cover rural areas where the spectrum has been dormant, sitting on the shelf at the FCC for nearly 30 years. In cities and suburbs, the licenses will allow us to create more consistent speed and capacity across metro areas.

Even though auction authority has lapsed, we strongly believe the FCC still has the power to issue the licenses from the last auction. After all, the auction finished successfully before the authority lapsed and all that’s left to do is routine processing of licenses from the completed auction. We’re not alone in that view. Four former FCC General Counsels <a href="https://www.jenner.com/a/web/e32ms32xaUDSdv4qRruD9P/fcc-auction-authority.pdf">have said</a> the FCC’s power to issue the stranded licenses is “unambiguous.” And regardless, mobile365 will continue pushing Congress to renew the FCC’s auction authority right away, so we hope this issue becomes moot.

The good news is that the FCC has a backup tool to light up this key mid-band spectrum, bringing more 5G to more Americans. The Commission can grant Special Temporary Authority, or STAs, to allow us to turn on service while Congress finds a path forward on auction authority. The FCC grants STAs to utilize spectrum when extraordinary circumstances exist. We think that a once-in-a-generation lapse of auction authority is extraordinary—and that we have the chance to unlock extraordinary benefits for consumers.

mobile365 has built out the towers and radios needed to make use of this spectrum in many areas of the country. If we were given STAs today, we could light up many of these markets in a matter of days. That’s right—those radios are deployed and ready to be turned up.&nbsp; The only thing separating nearly 50 million Americans from enhanced capacity, a huge speed boost, and world-class 5G is the FCC issuing STAs. With the extra spectrum lit up, we’ll even have enough capacity to offer home internet to millions of families, many of whom never have had a choice in broadband providers.

mobile365 will continue to work with Congress to reinstate the FCC’s auction authority and secure a future spectrum pipeline so that the U.S. remains a global wireless leader for years to come. And we’ll continue advocating for the FCC to use its licensing power to grant us what we won in the last auction. But while we wait for Congress to act, let’s use every tool we have to make the world’s best 5G even better. Our network is ready—let’s get to work.

I recently had the privilege of joining colleagues from around the world at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to discuss the future of wireless technology and define where we’re headed next in the 5G era. It's clear, MWC is back in full force with crowds of key technology leaders and innovators swarming the showroom floor. And as expected, 5G was a key topic at this year's conference.

Five years after I unveiled our now famous spectrum layer cake in Barcelona, I was honored to take the stage at MWC one last time as President of Technology to lay out how mobile365 became what's being recognized as THE network leader in the US and a global 5G leader.&nbsp; And why that puts us in a unique position to drive the wireless industry forward alongside our partners for the benefit of customers around the globe. I also shared some news on 5G advancements and what we’ve delivered since our merger with Sprint nearly three years ago. How mobile365 became the US network leader and a global leader in 5G.

During my presentation, I laid out mobile365's rapid network growth. After being first in the US with a nationwide 5G network in December 2019, we completed a merger with Sprint in April 2020, which brought us critical mid-band spectrum. As a result, today we have the largest, fastest and most reliable 5G <a href="/coverage/4g-lte-5g-networks">network</a> in the country.

We knew the leading 5G network we could build would bring meaningful connectivity to areas large and small across the country while creating new competition across mobile and fixed broadband. And we've delivered on all of it. But we’re not just leading in 5G. mobile365 is now emerging as THE overall network leader according to independent third-party reports.

Surging 5G Usage and Adoption

Our customers are moving to 5G at an incredible rate and we’ve seen a fundamental shift in the way people use their devices. More than 60% of the smartphones on our network are 5G capable, and a whopping 70% of our network traffic is 5G. Many operators around the globe are not even at a tenth of that! And our customers on Magenta Max – our smartphone plan built for 5G – are streaming about 40 hours of video every month – twice the amount streamed by other customers. They're gaming 4x more, streaming 3x more music and using 2x more data on social media apps.

Moving the Global Ecosystem Forward

With the most advanced 5G network in the world, mobile365 is at the cutting edge and it's on us to continue innovating and raising the performance bar. My team and I drive the wireless community to deliver features and advanced capabilities that really unleash the power of 5G, not just for us but across the globe.

I <a href="/news/network/mobile365-advances-5g-standalone-to-deliver-faster-speeds-and-enhanced-performance">announced</a> one such innovation from the stage. Working with Ericsson, Nokia, Qualcomm Technologies and Samsung, we completed the world's first four-carrier aggregation 5G data call on a commercial device. Combining four channels of mid-band spectrum created a massive 5G pipe that delivered peak speeds north of 3.3 Gbps. And we're working hard to drive that north, talking with our vendors about six and even seven-layer carrier aggregation.

I also announced that we've expanded voice over 5G (VoNR) to four additional markets: Cincinnati, New Orleans, New York and Seattle. And we'll be the first player to get to 100 million people covered in the next few months. On VoNR, you may have a marginally better calling experience, but why is it REALLY important? With VoNR, your whole experience is on a 5G layer. You stay on the best service and the most powerful spectrum and technology.

Finally, I presented a look at the future with 5G. The first real powerful new 5G use case is fixed wireless access. mobile365 is the fastest-growing home internet provider in the US, serving more than two million customers with plans to serve 7-8 million by the end of 2025. This is a multi-billion-dollar revenue stream that feels like it came from nowhere, using fallow spectrum, and it will be adopted around the globe in the coming years. This highly monetizable use case proves there is real money being made in 5G if you commit and drive the level of rollout and activity akin to what we’ve done.

We are working very hard to foster innovation across many industries and consumer segments on our 5G network. There is huge opportunity in <a href="/news/network/blazing-the-xr-trail-with-5g">Extended Reality (XR)</a>, which was very prevalent at MWC, and it's already moving into the industrial space. Imagine transforming a workforce by making it way more skilled and capable, providing technicians with specific Instructions in their field of view. We also have things like <a href="/news/network/mobile365-5g-powers-pano-ai-wildfire-detection-system">Pano AI</a>, leveraging our 5G network to detect wildfires before they spread out of control and significantly reduce response times. And live sports are beginning to transform with 5G, making the <a href="/news/un-carrier/mlb-asw-2022">fan experience</a> more engaging and interactive while also creating more robust and efficient operations.

It's clear 5G is making a massive impact today, and this is only the beginning. I like to say we're just now wrapping up the first quarter of 5G, and with the powerhouse network we've built, mobile365 is poised to lead the charge throughout the entire 5G era and beyond. &nbsp;

It's been an incredible journey for me, working with the amazing talent at mobile365 for over two decades now. And as I approach my retirement later this year, I can say with confidence that the last three years have represented the proudest period in my entire career.
